Understanding the science behind mine waste for better management

If you happened to be in a decision-making position in a mining project, there is no doubt that you need to be careful in a number of ways. This is due to the sheer risk of any mining project in general. One of the biggest problems in mining construction is maintaining a better site tidiness.

Why is it so hard? Why should you care about it? And what are the most cost-effective methods to get rid of it?… all these questions will be answered in this read. Hence, if you are looking forward for solutions that would ensure that your waste is being dealt with, along with numerous other non-technical operations, then you should keep until the end.

The science of mining waste is distinctively categorized. Naturally, there are 4 major kinds of mining waste that needs to be dealt with.

They are such as follows;

  1. Waste Rock

This necessarily doesn’t need to be elaborated. Waste rock directly addresses the rock that is excavated in order to reach to the ore. When the excavation is being carried out, the dug-out waste rock is stored close to the mine to reduce the transportation costs.

In the technical aspect, the amount of the waste rock that needs to be carried out depends on ore body geometry, the geological features of the location and even the mining method. Ammonia (NH3), Zinc and Copper is often found in these waste rocks and that increases the toxicity. Hence, it is clear that your company should not be identified as the party that is responsible for poisoning natural water bodies.

  • Tailings

Depending on the grade of the ore, that is the percentage of valuable minerals in the ore, a fine-grained mineral sand would remain as the ore is being treated and the valuable minerals are separated – this is terms as the tailing. How is it a type of waste that ought to be taken away? The presence of sulphide (S-2) risk to bond with the cations, and due to the high weathering since the finely grained nature, the contamination risk is there. Since the disposal of these cannot be done in the trivial ways, outsourced mining cleaning services is your best shot. This way, not only toxicities like this would be sorted, but these companies will take care of the rest as well.

  • Mine Water

The risk of hydro contamination must be avoided at all costs. In some countries, direct disposal of toxic substances to the natural water bodies are criminal offences. If there is a dire need of disposal to moving water bodies, the toxicity of the mineral water, the water that is mixed with the substances coming from the mining site, should be brought down to a sufficient amount of PPM (parts per million) value. Then again, outsourcing these operations to the reliable mining cleaning and management companies would be the best thing to do.

Being in the business world in the present times just isn’t easy; but having the right service providers will always make it much easier.
