Understanding the science behind mine waste for better management

  1. Waste Rock

  • Tailings

Depending on the grade of the ore, that is the percentage of valuable minerals in the ore, a fine-grained mineral sand would remain as the ore is being treated and the valuable minerals are separated – this is terms as the tailing. How is it a type of waste that ought to be taken away? The presence of sulphide (S-2) risk to bond with the cations, and due to the high weathering since the finely grained nature, the contamination risk is there.   • Mine Water

The risk of hydro contamination must be avoided at all costs. In some countries, direct disposal of toxic substances to the natural water bodies are criminal offences. If there is a dire need of disposal to moving water bodies, the toxicity of the mineral water, the water that is mixed with the substances coming from the mining site, should be brought down to a sufficient amount of PPM (parts per million) value.
